• A good gut is as important as a good brain. The multitasking second brain
How important is the intestine? The intestine is the body’s largest digestive organ, immune organ, and detox organ. The length of the human intestine can reach up to four to five times the body, spread out the total surface area of the intestinal mucosa is almost equivalent to half the size of a badminton court. The intestine is more known as the body’s second brain, it feels, thinks, and will also remember which affects people’s mood and state, so the health of the intestine affects the health of the body. Many people think that the stomach is the body’s main organ of digestion and absorption of food, but in fact, most of the food digestion and absorption process is carried out in the intestines, the stomach mainly stores food, and the food and stomach fluid mixed into a chyme, pushing into the small intestine, the small intestine digests food and absorbs nutrients, and then digests the remaining residue from the intestines will enter the large intestine through a bowel movement. The function of the large intestine is to absorb water and electrolyte, the rest of the substance to form feces that is stored in the large intestine until defecation. If the large intestine function is normal, naturally store the stools quantitatively with regular defecation. All detox channels, excreted feces through the large intestine are the highest proportion of toxins and waste pipeline.

Food into the body, in addition to nutrients, but also contains a variety of pathogens, toxins, bacteria, and other harmful substances, and should all these harmful substances enters the human body it will cause damages to health. The intestine is the main channel of food digestion, exposure to the most foreign substances such as feces and other waste and toxins also accumulate in the intestines. In order to protect against external threats, the body will concentrate the immunity in the intestines and with the intestinal mucosa and intestinal lymphatic tissue assembled up to 70% of the body’s immune cells, but also the manufacture of more than 70% of the immune globulin A (IgA) antibodies, and this take on the responsibility of resisting foreign harmful substances. There are thousands of bacteria in the intestines which sums up to 100 trillion and it is estimated that the total weight of bacteria in the normal adult intestine can reach 1.5 kg. The gut bacteria will participate in food digestion, metabolism protects and regulates the immune system. Intestinal bacteria are divided into good bacteria, bad bacteria, and bacteria that can be either good or bad. The richer the intestinal flora ecology, a good dynamic balance of the bacteria can help to maintain the health. If the bacteria are imbalanced and bad bacteria grows, not only will cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, and other problems, but also may cause intestinal damage and disease, and due to decreased immunity and other systemic diseases, so the intestinal clumps are also an important factor affecting immunity.

Known as the second great brain of human beings (THE SECOND BRAIN, Michael Gershon 1998), the enteric nervous system in the gastric tract has up to 100 million of neurons and is the second-largest and complicated nerve system in the whole body. Through the gut-axis brain, they are connected to each other, therefore you will experience poor appetite when under heavy stress or irritated, wanting to eat certain foods when in a bad mood, easy diarrhoea when stressed which all these are due to the relation between the intestine and the mood of the brain.

Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s have long been thought of as brain-structure diseases, and in recent years scientists have found that such brain diseases are also highly associated with the intestinal flora (Cell, Dr Mazmanian 2016), and the National Institute of Molecular and Genomic Medicine has published in the journal Nature Communications that the imbalance in the intestinal flora exacerbates the course of neurodegeneration of the Alzheimer’s brain; and the gut is better able to produce serotonin and dopamine, commonly known as Happy Hermon, which can promote positive optimism and produce happiness and satisfaction, so taking care of the gut can also affect brain function and mood.
